Passkey Guide

A passkey is a secure, password-free login credential that lets you sign in to websites and apps using your mobile device's biometrics (like a fingerprint or face scan), screen PIN, or by using various types of hardware security key. Starting Sept 1, 2026 for students and Oct 1, 2026 for staff, faculty and retirees, you will be prompted to set up a passkey after successfully completing MFA when signing in to a U of G Single Sign-On (SSO) protected service.

 

  1. Passkey Setup: You can set up a passkey for your account using the methods listed below
    1. The Microsoft Authenticator App is the most secure and versatile MFA method and is recommended as your default passkey method. To set up a passkey with Microsoft Authenticator, you can follow this guide
      Please note that there are some important requirements to use passkeys with the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device:

      • You will need the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator app.

      • Your device needs to be running Android 14 or later for Android devices, or iOS 17 or later for Apple devices.

      • For cross-device authentication, both the device with the passkey and the device you're logging into must have Bluetooth enabled, along with an active internet connection.

      • Microsoft recommends using Microsoft Edge (version 109 or newer), Safari (version 16 or newer), or Chrome (version 109 or newer) to ensure proper functionality.

    2. If you want to set up a passkey on your phone, but your device is out of date (Android 13 or earlier, & iOS 16 or earlier), you can contact the IT Help Centre, provide them with a screenshot of your mobile device version verifying it is out-of-date and request to be added to the "Synced Passkey" allow-list
      1. Once you have received confirmation that you've been added to the allow-list, you can follow the steps in this guide to set up a passkey
    3. If you do not have a phone, you can use a hardware security key as a Passkey, and you can follow this guide
