Completing Passkey Prompt — Old Phones

Setting Up Your Passkey Using an Older Phone

Follow the steps below to set up a passkey for your University of Guelph account if your device is running Android 13 or below for Android devices, or iOS 16 or lower for Apple devices.

Please note that there are some important requirements to use passkeys on your mobile device:

Step 1 — Proceed through the prompt

  1. Click "Next" on the following two pop-up windows

Step 2 — Select Where to Save Passkey

  1. To save the passkey to your account, select the "iPhone, iPad, or Android device" option from the pop-up window
  2. If you plan to save your passkey to a hardware token/security key, please refer to the instructions provided in the following guide

Step 3 — Saving The Passkey

  1. You'll be presented with a window prompting you to "Save your passkey"
  2. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
  3. Tap the QR code icon in the app and then scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen
  4. You should be prompted on your phone to connect your iPhone or Android to this device, at which point you can select to continue until the prompt on your computer indicates the device is connected
  5. Your Microsoft Authenticator app should inform you that the passkey has been created, and you may select the "Done" option on your phone

Step 4 — Name the Passkey

  1. As a final step, you'll be prompted to name the Passkey to help identify it later (it is best practice to give it a name that will help identify the specific phone it is associated with)

  2. After you've named the Passkey, you'll be able to proceed with using it to sign in to your account

Step 5 — Setup Passkey as Default Authentication Method

  1. Log into your U of G M365 account by visiting https://mysignins.microsoft.com/
  2. Choose the "Security info" option on the left navigation bar.
  3. From the ‘Security info’ page, look for ‘Default sign-in method' and click on the word ‘Change’.

  4. You will be presented with a drop-down list of your configured MFA methods. Choose ‘App based authentication or hardware token - code’.

  5. Your M365 account is now secured with passkey authentication.

Your New and Improved Login Experience

Once the changes you have made to your account fully take effect, your login experience to U of G services will change. The next time you log in, after entering your U of G username (your central login ID @ uoguelph.ca or @guelphhumber.ca), you will be prompted to use your passkey instead of entering your password.  From the authentication page, ensure ‘iPhone, iPad, or Android device’ is selected and click ‘Next’.

Now, open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device and click the ‘Scan QR code’ button on the bottom right and scan the QR code on screen. Review the sign-in information presented to verify your account and the service you are logging into and click ‘Continue’.
