When asking for IT support for a "Managed Computer", you will need to provide the name of your computer.  Managed computers are computers that are owned by the University and supported by University IT staff, versus personally owned computers. 

 

1 . Is my computer a "Managed Computer"?

If one or more of the following is true, your computer is a "Managed Computer":

  • Follows a standard naming convention <Department Mnemonic>-<Serial Number> e.g. CCS-B16LY33.
  • For Windows computers, the computer is domain joined i.e. you login to the computer using your central login ID prefixed with "cfs\".
  • For macOS computers, the computer has been enrolled in JAMF, the University's management platform for macOS devices.

 

2 . What is the name of my Windows computer?

There are quick ways to look-up the name of a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer:

  1. Press Windows logo key  + I  to open System>Settings. Scroll down to "About".  The computer name is displayed at the top of the screen. 

  2. Type "PC Name" at the Windows Search are then press enter.  That will go directly to the System>Settings>About page the computer name is displayed at the top of the screen.

Hint: to copy your computer name for pasting into an email, select the name displayed beside the label "Device Name". Right-click.  Copy.


2 . What is the name of my macOS computer?

  1. Open the Apple menu. 
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. In the System Preferences window, click Sharing.
  4. Your computer name will be listed at the top of the Sharing window.
